United Nations World Issues Reflection

31 05 2007

One of the presentations that I really liked was the one about International Law. This is something that I have been wondering a lot over. I was shocked to hear that there are actually laws that do not apply to war. I thought that International Law was mostly something to do with wars and human rights in wars. I was though surprised that the Peace Keeping group didn’t talk about the problems with Peace Keepers. Some peace keepers have actually started violence instead of stopping it. If you don’t know what I mean check out these links: http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2006/11_november/30/un.shtml

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6690155.stm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6233527.stm

I can’t really reflect back on the presentation and project yet because I haven’t finished them. I can though say one thing that I would do differently next time. I would use ONE computer only because my problems have occurred when I was transferring the project between computers.

Current Event: Tiger Rebels Air Attack on Colombo, 29/04/07

29 04 2007

Citation: BBC News. 29 April 2007. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6604645.stm (29 April 2007).

What is the issue?
The issue is that the Tiger Rebels in Sri Lanka have started using aircrafts to attack cities, military and government. This make is it easier to the rebels to attack faster, harder and deeper. While it makes it a greater challenge for the military to shot the attacker or arrest them. The latest attack was held at 05:52 GMT on the 29 0f April. The attacks hit fuel facilities. The government forces fired anti-aircraft guns and cut the power supply to Colombo (Sri Lanka’s Capital) and the airport.

Who is involved?
The whole population of Sri Lanka and its visitors because of the new resources the threat has become greater. The main people it involved though are the population of Colombo as they are the main target and the government officials. The Tiger Rebels have made themselves more wanted by military and have felt more attacks by military too.

Who is affected and how?

  • The population of Sri Lanka because the treat has grow now with the rebels new resources.
  • The Government Officials and Military because they have to focus on this issue to solve the conflict with the rebels as fast as possible top not but the population in unnecessary risks.

What would you do if you were directly involved?
If I was directly involved I would try to schedule a meeting for the rebels and government to meet and try to solve this issue. I would also see if I (and the government) could make a deal with the rebels. We would give them food supply and they would stop using there aircrafts. I would in all ways try to decrease the number of attacks done by the rebels and encourage them to stop using force.

Famous Egyptians Reflection

24 04 2007

The presentations in S.St. were interesting gave much factual information. I learned that Egypt had dynysties that rose all the way up to the 20th dynisty. I also learned that my pharaoh was the pharoah that had had most children of them all. Thinking back to my presentation I don’t really know anything that I could better(that I’m aware of). Please feel free to post thing that I could do better in the Comments section. It was an interesting mixes of presentations and some presentations made you come awake. Nice Job everyone.

Famous Egyptians Speech

24 04 2007

I, Ramses II, was the second longest ruler of Egypt. I wouldn’t be surprised if you knew me as the son of Queen Tuy and Sety I. As I ruled Egypt, it didn’t only expand in size it also grew in wealth and power.

Now you’re most likely thinking: Well who is this guy? I’m the 3rd ruler of the 19th dynasty. My name is Ramses II and I have over 100 children and many wives. My favorite wife is Nefertari. Not all of my wives have the tendency to like me, one of them even tried to kill me! I enjoy great wealth and try to give my people what they want. As I told you before, during the time that I ruled Egypt, which was 67 years, Egypt took part of many wars and expanded its area greatly. Architecture and art are two of my major interests. I therefore am the pharaoh of Egypt that created the most temples and statues ever. With building all these temples I try to make my successor believe I was a great pharaoh. One of the buildings I have built is the grave of my father. Since I came to the throne at the age of 20 I have had time to accomplish a lot.

I’m a very important ruler of Egypt. I’m so important and great that I hope that kings will want to call themselves Ramses. I thought that a great ruler should have a great capital so I created the capital Per-Ramses. For those who don’t know what this means I’ll explain. In English Per-Ramses means City of Ramses, which I thought was a great name for a capital. I tried to put justice to Egypt by creating many laws. I defended Egypt against many attacks from nations or groups such as the Libyans the Sea People and the Hittites. In the war with the Hittites they got very weak and I saw the chance to make diplomatic ties.

I am trying to make the impact on the successors that I am a great example of how a king should be. I created the famous temples of Abu Simbel. I hope that some of my temples and statues will last for hundreds of years. I’m trying my best to show that people of Egypt are better than the Hebrews by using them for labor a lot.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I feel that I have done a lot for the people of Egypt and hope to be remembered as a great ruler when I pass away. I hope that I have helped the people of Egypt a lot and hope to help them even more in the future. I am one great ruler; I think that sums it all up.

Current Event Response Posting 09/03/07

9 03 2007

Citation of Article:
BBC News. ” Bush announces Latin America aid.” BBC News, Edition N/A. March 5 2007. <http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6421701.stm> (March 9 2007).

How are the two events connected?
These two events are connected because the US Presidents are going around the globe to try to help other nations and build stronger relationships. Caren Bohan (the US vice president) was just in Pakistan and now US President Bush goes on a one week trip two Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico. The US is also giving aid to some of these countries just like to Pakistan.

What did you find interesting about this topic?
I found it interesting that so many people in South America don’t think the US is helping them at all. Only talks and helping them with thing that they don’t want help with. Also that though all this the US stays strong and goes around for talks. The countries expecting him or where he is right now have massive protests, the governments don’t care they just welcome him in.

What did you like about the initial blog posting?
The font was nice and large so there was no problem reading it. On other blogs there may be some introduction but there was none of this here which made you start to read it and continue.

Current Event: N Korea Aggreas to Nuclear Deal

14 02 2007

Citation:
“Rice hails N Korea nuclear deal.” BBC News. 13 February 2007.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/6358797.stm (14 February 2007)

Also some information from BBC News, BBC World +8:00 19:00 News 14 February 2007

What is the issue?
Delegates from North Korea, South Korea, US, Japan, China and Russia have agreed on a deal to shut down N Korea’s main nuclear reactor, Yongbyon. The Yongbyon will be shut down within 60 days and international inspectors will verify that Yongbyon is closed. As part of the deal N Korea will receive 50,000 metric tons of fuel or economic aid with the same value.

Who is involved?
The North Koreans are involved because it’s them who are receiving aid. The US because it finally gets N Korea to shut down its main reactor, which makes the treat of a nuclear attack lesser. China, Japan & S Korea because they have been worrying that they might be targets for a nuclear missile.

Who is affected and how?
They population of the US, China, Japan and South Korea because they don’t need to feel that the treat of a nuclear attack is at the same level any more. The population of N Korea because they will hopefully get some aid.

What would you do if you were directly involved?
If I was directly involved I would try to make sure N Korea really shuts down Yongbyon and that the aid that is given reaches the people who need it. I would also try to continue talks to get N Korea to get rid of the nuclear weapons it already has.

AA Reflection 2 12/02/07

12 02 2007

What would you change about the final product (the wiki you created) if you were to do the assignment again?
If I was to redo this assignment I would make the wiki in more like a theme then just random titles and ways of organising the information. I would try to get the information up there as quick as possible and use the rest of the time to touch-up (more like using ultra good wax on a car) the wiki. I would also go for titles that were made in Photoshop or Fireworks. This makes the wiki look more professenal and it is harder for someone else to get the same result.

Look at some of the other wikis from any class and find a few that you think are done exceptionally well. Tell me the name of the empire and the block, and then explain what you like about their wiki.
Zimbabwe - Block H
I liked the way that they set a theme on all the links (that really were images;). This made the page look more professional and like more effort was put into it.
Swahili Trading States - Block E
It was fun the way they wrote a short caption to the different links. This made it more amusing than just looking at links and words.

AA Reflection 1 12/02/07

11 02 2007

What did you learn from this task?
I learned that sometimes you need to tell people what to do and what not to do the whole time. I also learned that the different kingdoms of Ancient Africa took over the earlier kingdom to become a greater kingdom many times.

Did you find this difficult or easy? Why?
I found it difficult to get the video done in time because sometimes it felt as if I was the only one working. It was easy to make the wiki itself because it was only writing.

What would you change about the process you went through to complete the wiki if you were to do the assignment again?
I would try to make the various group members work faster and use the time more efficient then this time. Otherwise I feel that I did the best I could on this project with this time limit.

Response Posting to Ziye’s Current Event

2 12 2006

BBC News. ” Bush and top Iraqi Shia to meet.” BBC News, Edition N/A. December 1 2006. <http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6200590.stm> (December 2 2006).

BBC News. “Living in the shadow of ‘civil war’.” BBC News, Edition N/A. November 30 2006. <http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6158847.stm> (December 2 2006).

New Information about the Iraq Situation
There is less activity than usually in Baghdad for one simple reason, civil war is be near. People are afraid to go out because of the increasing amount of violence. Bush also seems to want to put the security matter of Iraq in the Iraqi government’s hands. Though just think of it if the US troops weren’t there, leaving the security matter to a country which is very near civil war. I do not think that is a good idea.

What did you find interesting about this topic?
This topic is very interesting because they can’t really make up their minds. To send more troops to Iraq, take troops out of Iraq. They’re changing tactics week to week. It would be time to do something instead. Though this is a delicate matter and the wrong decision could make Iraq go into civil war.

What did you like about the initial blog posting?
I think the Ziye’s blog posting gave a very clear view of what the issue was. I also like how he thought of talking instead of fighting. It is thru “A few simple words can solve big issues” just like Ziye said.
